You already know from reading Marketing Blurb, that Macy’s is hell bend on nationwide department store domination. And while the Macy’s brand does have regional cache, the red star is not welcome everywhere. When Macy’s decided to replace Marshall Field’s flagship store on State Street in Chicago with their own brand name, protesters filled the streets. We’re talking unhappy campers with signs proclaiming “Hell no, not my dough” and ”Macy’s is just Wal-mart with Pretension.” Perhaps Macy’s doesn’t understand the power of a century old icon with generation of loyal shoppers. Think grandma with adult grand children packing Molotov cocktails. On the plus side, Macy’s did hand out $ 10 gift cards to early shoppers, and provided doughnut holes and coffee served in glass cups. But to add insult to injury, Macy’s will continue to sell Frango mints without the Marshall Field’s brand name. Marketing Blurb is not convinced the country needs a national department store brand, and we will seek our morning coffee and doughnuts elsewhere. Photo Credit: Associated Press
