Marketing Blurb enjoys a mixed drink as much as the next pundit. We believe it’s a simple enough exercise to select a glass, add ice, and use a shot jigger to achieve the perfect cocktail for guests or ourselves. As such, our simple sensibilities are offended by the thought of 12 ounce premixed cocktails sold in cans. But according to Advertising Age (free registration required,) this product abomination is selling well in a Tampa-area test market. We’re talking cans here—cans of premixed Captain Morgan and Cola, Smirnoff Vodka and Lemon-Lime Soda, George Dickel Whisky and Cola, and Seagram's 7 American Whiskey and Lemon-Lime Soda. "They're selling very well and we're pleased," said Bob Gibson, marketing director for ABC Fine Wines & Spirits, a chain of 150 Florida liquor stores. While common in Europe, premixed canned cocktails have yet to take off in the US. Brewers fear the canned cocktails will be sold alongside their six-packs and further erode the market share of beer.
