Marketing Blurb used to work for the number two salty snack company in the free and non-Communist world. That company was, believe it or not—Borden. (Remember Elsie the Cow?) Borden once owned Eagle Brand snacks, a feeble competitor to giant Frito-Lay. Of course, times have changed. The Cow died, and Frito-Lay is in the capable hands of Pepsico. And as it turns out, Pepsico is enjoying considerable success with a
worldwide insatiable appetite for salty snacks. But here in the US, we cannot get the good stuff. Consider seaweed flavored potato chips in Thai markets or Lays Mediterraneans, a line fried in olive oil and offered in flavors such as feta cheese and tomato-and-basil. Geez, which a bowl of those puppies and a bottle of wine, even your wife would watch the game. Pepsico is also marketing crackers with cumin and poppyseeds in the Middle East. Some analysts believe Pepsico can seize a worldwide leadership in snacks to match their success with beverages.
