If you are seated at the computer reading a marketing blog, you probably have too much time on your hands, and you might be overweight. (No need to adjust the webcam, we are just making a sweeping generalization.) You want to eat healthy foods, but face it—junk food tastes better. So the folks at Unilever want to help you with a need food-labeling program keyed to match US dietary guidelines for “nutrients of
concern” trans fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. The new labels will a bright blue “Choices” nutritional label with the words “Eat Smart or Drink Smart” and “Based on US Dietary Guidelines.” Unilever will add the labels to about a third of their food brands including Ragu, Slim-Fast, Promise, Skippy, Lipton Tea, and Hellmann’s/Best Choice. Only items with fewer than 60 mg of cholesterol per serving (per FDA guidelines) will qualify for the new labeling. While
Marketing Blurb applauds this effort, consumers will still buy food products based on taste—not nutritional value. Now if you will excuse us, we are going to whip up a vat of the above mentioned Unilever products.
