The next revolution will not just be televised—the next revolution will also be simulcast to your cell phone. Whether you like it or not (and we do not) Nokia is determined to turn your cell phone into a mini multimedia computer which can play music and video, take and send photos, retriever and compose email, take out the dog, and prepare dinner. After a few years of lack-luster designs, Nokia’s new N95 high-end camera phone
includes a sliding cover, and keys for playing and pausing music. Of course this puppy costs anywhere from $450 to $700 and every digital function is inferior to dedicated devices the phone seeks to replace. The less costly N91 model can hold 6000 songs—but who is counting? And do you really want calls coming in when you’re trying to listen to tunes? According to The Wall Street Journal, (paid subscription required,) Nokia entered into a $ 60 million content deal with digital music distributor Loudeye to bring music to the phone. Of course, music industry pundits still expect Apple to release a iPod cellular phone at some future date. Marketing Blurb believes the future for cell phones is a single-purpose device the size of a jewelry brooch. Slap your chest and say “Beam me up, Scotty.”
