Marketing Blurb is well-past the days of raising infants, so we are out-of-touch with the emergence of organic infant formulas. While the $ 3.1 million sales of organic formula are just a fraction of the $ 3.1 billion baby food market, the category increased 19% from the year before, according to ACNielsen. As you might expect, women often pursue healthier lifestyles during pregnancy, including the consideration of organic foods. But according to Brandweek, the breakthrough for the category is resulting from the participation of industry giants Wal-Mart, Similac, and Hain Celestial. Similac was the first to enter the category, but Wal-Mart introduced a store brand, called Parent’s Choice last summer. All three brands are using non-traditional online and buzz marketing to reach their target consumer. Pregnant women are more likely to turn to family, friends, and peers for infant care advice, rather than television advertising.
