Marketing Blurb believes in eating a healthy diet. We also believe that healthy eating is a personal choice and cannot be mandated or supervised by food manufacturers, retailers or legislators. Maybe your Mom can force you to eat a healthy diet, but other than that—you are on your own. So we have mixed feelings about what we just learned from The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required,) regarding a test Pepsi is conducting in Chicago. Pepsi is attempting to persuade inner-city African-American and Latino merchants and their customers to eat healthier snacks. The plan includes a pitch to replace popular junk food snacks like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos an Nocho Cheese Doritos with healthier baked snack alternatives. Of course the first hurdle is convincing commissioned sales representatives the switch will be revenue neutral. In an even more progressive move, Pepsi plans to build playgrounds, hold nutrition and exercise seminars, and organize walks outside grocery stores. Marketing Blurb believes consumers deserve choice, and we hope they choose healthier foods.
