New Threads for Wal-Mart Workers?
We have explained to readers many times, that times are changing at Wal-Mart. With same stores sales stuck in idle, the retailer giant has already decided to target a more affluent customer with higher price point (and higher margin) items. Not every store will change, but Wal-Mart finally realizes they must know segment their merchandising to serve more distinct audiences. And to take the image uptown, Wal-Mart is considering walmart_uniform.jpgrevamping the iconic blue vests and smocks worn by store personnel. According to The New York Times (free registration required,) Wal-Mart is testing a new uniform consisting of a blue polo shirt and khaki pants in 100 of their stores. The look is decided more preppy, and Wal-Mart is waiting for customer and employee feedback before rolling out the threads to 1.3 million US workers. There is already some concern the uniform is too similar to that worn by employees at Best Buy. The New York Times also notes that Wal-Mart opened a NY trend-spotting office, in hopes of identifying styles or merchandise similar to those stocked by trendier rival Target Stores. Marketing Blurb believes a new, more upscale uniform might make Wal-Mart employees appear less oppressed. Photo Credit: The New York Times
