The world used to be a simple place where you could depend upon Sony to offer the best consumer electronics for a premium price you were willing to pay. But while we busy with other pursuits, something changed. We ordered a Sony VHS player and CD player a few years ago (this was pre-DVD mind you) and were surprised to receive inferior products in function and design. We haven’t purchased a Sony Product since
(although we still have a Sony television from the 1970s in the basement that runs just fine.) And consumer electronics pundits who know far more than we do, generally pan Sony products as well. We keep reading about a turnaround at Sony in
Fortune or
Business Week, but who knows what is happening? We do know from our friends at
Advertising Age (free registration required) that Sony is soliciting ad agencies to create their first corporate branding campaign in years.
Marketing Blurb is all for corporate branding campaigns, but we remind readers that advertising cannot fix inferior products. We wish Sony well with product improvements, and the winning agency well with the campaign.
