From the UK comes a great example of a special offer that went viral and showcased the true power of the web.
In November, Threshers, an off-license liquor/wine chain, published a "friends and family" 40% off discount coupon for wine and champagne on their website. After a a South African winery published the coupon, it went viral in blogs, chat rooms and forums and had been downloaded over 800,000 times as of December 1st (the offer expired today). Given that the population of Britain is only 60 million, that represents a darn impressive market penetration rate.
To truly achieve great viral marketing there is definitely some level of luck involved but when a campaign hits, it goes big. Wow.
