Continuing the trend of using "power of free" in marketing, Wikia (the for-profit sister company of Wikipedia) announced that they will host wikis for free (and not take any of the ad revenue) for anyone who wants one.
For some of the other wiki companies out there who take a piece of the ad revenue (e.g. Wetpaint) this is probably not a very welcome surprise. Just like Skype's move to offer free calls prior to the Vonage IPO, it is a powerful potential competitive move.
Plus when you combine the strategic aspect with the fact that this move is also potentially a great marketing/SEO tactic, you have to admit the Wikia team were drinking some potent brew when they thought this one up.
