Why?
Because they drive huge amounts of traffic.

Now, chances are you're not TechCrunch. But the tail is long and vertical social search engines are starting to spring up.
Regardless of whether you implement it now, social search/discovery optimization is worth watching. Just remember that the best way to succeed on these sites and in business is to pass the "Who Cares?" test.
