Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks) has an interesting rant on his blog about why sports marketing is all wrong. His basic hypothesis is that sports marketing is inauthentic.
He holds up Happy Gilmore as the type of personality that sports needs more of. Slightly Insane. Ridiculously good. Big personality. Worth watching. On the court/field/course and off.
I'd put in another way. Stories, people and products worth talking about get talked about. Those not worth talking about don't, no matter what tricks you pull or how much marketing you buy.
Is your product worth talking about?
