New York Magazine has a great article from Po Bronson on the peril of praising kids. There has been some remarkable research into the myth of self-esteem in the today's society and this article explores that. It's really fascinating stuff.
I'd encourage you to read the article and think about all the different areas of life that this phenomenon is relevant in. In my own life, any number jump to mind. My relationship with my long-time girlfriend, my research collaborators, my teammates on various sports teams, my family and even my marketing efforts are all intimately intertwined with praise. It a big part of how I communicate. But this article has made me question how I do it.
Fascinating stuff.
