Will Buzz Marketing Hurt Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Yes, another Harry Potter post, but the clock is ticking fast and the release of what is possibly the most widely anticipated book ever written is almost upon us.  Like most Harry Potter fans, I've been doing everything in my power to avoid reading or hearing any spoilers about the plotline of the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series.  From a business perspective, however, the question has been asked whether the buzz marketing associated with Harry Potter, which often manifests itself in the form of real and fake spoilers, will negatively impact sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.Harry%20Potter%20and%20the%20Deathly%20Hallows%20book.jpg

Earlier this week, J.K. Rowling published a plea to the world saying, "We are almost there! As launch night looms, let's all, please, ignore the misinformation popping up on the web and in the press on the plot of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I'd like to ask everyone who calls themselves a Potter fan to help preserve the secrecy of the plot for all those who are looking forward to reading the book at the same time on publication day. In a very short time you will know EVERYTHING!"

According to the Wall Street Journal, most fans, like me, want to read the ending of the Harry Potter series for themselves and are desperately trying to avoid spoilers.  Ann Binkley, a spokesperson for Borders Group Inc. (NYSE: BGP) stated that retailers don't anticipate a drop in sales as a result of leaked plotlines and spoilers, and even if fans do hear a spoiler, they are highly likely to purchase and read the book anyway.

I can't think of many other movies or books that have such a strong fan-base that sales aren't impacted by premature disclosure of information people have been desperately waiting to learn for years.  Yes, Harry Potter is not just a brand or product.  It's an empire and an amazing case study for marketers to study for many years to come.

so so so sad end!

I've already lamely heard some spoilers; it's hard to avoid. Especially if you blog and need to read your feeds every day. (Including today). I think that with the internet, things have gotten better because you can find info when you need it but that it's also taken some surprise out of life because you often find stuff you don't need to know yet -- movie endings, book endings, The Office ending (my worst nightmare). It's an impossible situation to solve. I'll still read the book. Or, maybe I should just wait two years for the movie...Good post!

I guess everyone is trying to "scoop" the ending. I can't figure out what the purpose of publishing fake spoilers would be. It seems like the credibility that is lost would certainly offset any temporary gains in traffic.

I completely agree, Laura. I don't know why people enjoy ruining things for other people. They must lead very sad lives if they think that kind of thing is fun. What makes me most upset is when spoilers and leaked information impacts children.

I'm with you, Jennifer. I'm going to read the book no matter what. In fact, when I finish working tonight, I'm going to open up my new copy and get started!

I guess some people really have a need to feel powerful and spoiling things for others is a juvenile way they go about it. I remember seeing a video someone had posted online where some kid and his friends drove by people waiting for the release of the previous book "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" and the kid shouted "Snape kills Dumbledore!" out the window. I actually heard some of the kids in line crying when they heard this. I can only hope that someone eventually performed the Cruciatus curse on that punk.

Thanks for making me laugh, Scott, but isn't the Cruciatus curse one of the unforgiveable curses? We don't want anyone going to Azkaban!
