Publix Offers 7 Prescription Drugs for Free

In a bold move that is sure to draw a lot of attention and word-of-mouth advertising, Publix has taken the recent price slashes on prescription drugs one step further by announcing they will offer seven popular antibiotics for freePublix%20logo.jpg

Many retailers have slashed prescription prices recently in an attempt to increase store traffic and hopefully, sales of nonprescription and nonmedicinal items.  Publix appears to be giving these seven drugs the loss leader role with their new marketing strategy.  The drugs they'll provide for free (in 14-day supplies) include:

    1. Amoxicillin
    2. Cephalexin
    3. Penicillin VK
    4. Erythromycin
    5. Ampicillin
    6. Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim
    7. Ciprofoxacin

I shop at Publix, but I get my prescriptions at CVS.  Looks like that might be changing, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be motivated to act.  It will be interesting to see which retailers will follow Publix's lead and offer similar or better programs.  Hopefully, this trend can only mean good things for consumers.

What do you think about this trend?

This sounds like a great deal for the consumer, but how does Publix fund something like this? I guess that's the public company shareholder in me coming out and that doesn't seem to apply with Publix as an employee-owned business. They'll certainly buy a lot of goodwill with this move and while they hope to boost their pharmacy business, this seems like an honest effort at helping consumer manage one aspect of skyrocketing healthcare costs.

» Publix's Free Drugs Come at a Bigger Cost from MarketingBlurb
Earlier this week, I published a post called Publix Offers 7 Prescription Drugs for Free.  It turns out, nothing really comes for free.  The cost this time: Publix dropped is $4 Walmart/Target prescription price matching program.Prior to the ... [Read More]

Just like any Gimmick Program or offer,There is always a catch,or some sort of hook,Wallymart Did it to boost there lagging sales total store and to boost there Image in the community from a greedy ,uncareing company to more of a we care about our customers and community image,They dont care about there own employees,Everytime there is an advertised special,I go to get it at the local Walmart,Guess what,There is always some lame excuse why they dont have it,then they will point out something placed in the ad such as quanties limited or not avaliable at all locations etc,why bother putting it on the front page of your ad?Ti get us suckers in there to do the rest of our shopping. So I figured here this last time i saw something I wanted ,A GPS unit,So I said well when it goes on sale ill sit at my computer since it was going to also be avaliable online at Walmart.com,Well I filled everything out like I was supposed, made sure they still had them in stock, to ordered it and got to the confirmation page and the screen goes blank,And I assumed my order was taken since i got a confermation on it.Well I checked the next day No order is present,so I emailed them ,and they claimed no order was recieved, and did I get a confermation number,I said I got the page but you cut me off so fast I did not get a chance to write it down,Well as the typical Walmart additude to there customers is,i got the well thats to bad better luck next time,So I assumed they were all out of stick on the item as it was a short term sale kind of deal,So I stopped by my local Walmart on the way home the next day and they had a big dump bin display of them by the electronics counter, but at the regular price, which was far abover the sale price, typical Walmart bussiness pratices,So if someone advertises free perscription drugs such as walmart does ,thats fine, but like the rest of there items they advertise to just get you in the store, they will not have any .or they will pull them out of the back room and display them a day after the sale,if you look at the small print in there sale ads you will see how they get away with it,in the wording.
