In a bold move that is sure to draw a lot of attention and word-of-mouth advertising, Publix has taken the recent price slashes on prescription drugs one step further by announcing they will offer seven popular antibiotics for free. ![]()
Many retailers have slashed prescription prices recently in an attempt to increase store traffic and hopefully, sales of nonprescription and nonmedicinal items. Publix appears to be giving these seven drugs the loss leader role with their new marketing strategy. The drugs they'll provide for free (in 14-day supplies) include:
- Amoxicillin
- Cephalexin
- Penicillin VK
- Erythromycin
- Ampicillin
- Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim
- Ciprofoxacin
I shop at Publix, but I get my prescriptions at CVS. Looks like that might be changing, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be motivated to act. It will be interesting to see which retailers will follow Publix's lead and offer similar or better programs. Hopefully, this trend can only mean good things for consumers.
What do you think about this trend?

This sounds like a great deal for the consumer, but how does Publix fund something like this? I guess that's the public company shareholder in me coming out and that doesn't seem to apply with Publix as an employee-owned business. They'll certainly buy a lot of goodwill with this move and while they hope to boost their pharmacy business, this seems like an honest effort at helping consumer manage one aspect of skyrocketing healthcare costs.
