Publix's Free Drugs Come at a Bigger Cost

Earlier this week, I published a post called Publix Offers 7 Prescription Drugs for Free.  It turns out, nothing really comes for free.  The cost this time: Publix dropped is $4 Walmart/Target prescription price matching program.Publix%20Free%20Drugs.jpg

Prior to the launch of Publix's seven free prescription drugs program, the company would match the $4 price of over 60 prescription medications offered by Walmart (NYSE: WMT), Target (NYSE: TGT) and other retailers.  Those 60 prescriptions included a wide variety of long-term medications.  Over time, the $4 price matching program would save customers significantly more money than the seven free prescription antibiotics that are typically only used for a week or two.

As an aside, the Publix corporate office is denying publicly that they discontinued their price matching program, but Publix employees at the store level are confirming that they have been instructed to stop offering the discounts.  Many customers are already feeling the effect on their wallets.

Long story short, Publix giveth and Publix taketh away.  It seems like nothing comes without a cost these days.  What do you think about this unfortunate turn of events?

I'm very disappointed. I really thought that Publix was trying to make a difference with their "free" antibiotics program and were putting image before profit. I tell you; Corporate America and their goodwill efforts often remind me of Lucy from the Peanuts, she'll hold that football and the public will believe and try to kick it...

remember reading that Florida's governor, Charlie Crist, was mentioned in the article as helping them make the announcement at a Fort Myers store. I wonder how he'll handle this poke in the eye from Publix.

I don't think any corporation can compete with Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart knows it can make more money by enticing people into it's belly with those $4 drugs. Publix can't do that. It's a grocery store. It's not about being a big profit monster for Publix, it's about not losing way too much money.
They tried it. It failed miserably for them, so they tried the free antibiotics thing. Better then nothing, I suppose.

I have to agree with you:

1) It's very hard to compete with Walmart
2) Something is better than nothing

Well said!

Why should Publix or any other chain Give anything away?,You should feel lucky if they choose to,You ipen a bussiness and Give away a bunch of items for free Then see how long you stay in bussinessIf you look up Publix Supermarket charietys,You will see that Publix gives away much more than a few perscription drugs to people,They have that charity and many more,And I have never known them to ever turn down a legit chariety or person in need,Maybe before you shoot your mouths off bashing a very good company,You should look into what they have and are doing for the community,And how much they are giving away,Id bet its far much more than a few prescriptions,Ask United Way ,thats one charity, that benifits tremendously from Publix employee donations every year, and I believe the company does a match on what the employees donate. Its Millions of dollars just for that one charity .So next time Choose a company that deserves to be bashed,if you did your homework before you wrote your letters bashing a company that wont give you something for free like the walmart down the street is,because they run such a lousy understaffed, nightmare of a store, they need to give something away to keep there customers,Publix,Runs a quality, service oriented, clean ,well staffed professional store,Not one that when an employee see,s you they run for the back room so they avoid helping you because there so understaffed they will have 5 or 6 customers waiting to talk to them if they stop to help you like at walmart, then there is the dirty looks you get if you look at a walmart employee walking by like you need help,God forbid if you opened your mouth to just say Hi to them, they would prob break into a dead run for the backroom to get away,Keep your free prescription drugs,Ill shop where Im treated like a Human, rather than cattle,or pigs.Thank you Publix for running a fine quality supermarket with great service,Also Publix offers Paper large sacks,Walmart only offers the small plastic bags that will split on you if you put any wieght in them ,and if you but over a $100.00 bucks worth of groceries,You have 10,000 plastic bags full of items slideing all over your car or truck floor out of them,And how many trips into the house does it take? And if your lucky they wont split as you go up 2 flights of stairs if you live in an apt. Then there is the lack of bagging at walmart,no carry out service at all,And you will have like 8 self serve check outs and a line a mile long on the only register open at 6pm and cashiers standing up at the front little booth as they watch you check out if your lucky enough to find a self check out open,I find it sickening to have 3 walmart employees standing there watching me scan my own groceries, bag them ,pack them in a cartand walk past the other person at the door as i leave standing there,I guess walmarts idea of customer service is much different from what most people expect, had those 3 people standing there watching helped out there would have been no lines,And I wouldent have had to do all the work and pay for my groceries to boot,I dont care how much perscriptions they give away,Ill always go to publix where they have bag boys, they have cashiers, and they have someone to carry out my groceries .What do they do for disabled people watch them try to wheel out there groceries?Publix also has plenty of help in the store that will recognise you are having a problem finding something and ask you if you need help,Talk about a night and day difference,And lets not get into who has items in stock ,and who has sale signs up on there advertised products and who does not do this,Publix has ad sighns up on everything,Walmart You have no idea whats on sale ,unless you grab a flyer as you go in the store, and most of that stuff will not be in stock, they will happily point out to you that in the ad it says limited quanities and may not be avaliable at all locations and all kinds of excuses like this,No thank you,I will go to a store that keeps there advertised specials in stock and if not will give me a rain check not like at walmart, where they again point out the small print in the ad that says quanites limited and refuse to give you a rain check for items they either never got in stock or had very few of during the sale.Who needs that aggrivation,Go To a store that treats you like a customer or Guest, not like your lucky i let you in the door to shop.
