I read a great article on Brandweek's website today. The article provides an overview and excerpt from a new book that was published this summer called Marketing to the Social Web by Larry Weber.![]()
In his book, Larry Weber purports that, "Web 2.0 will change marketing as we know it." He also states that on the social web, "the customer is in control." I agree wholeheartedly with those statements, and I really enjoyed reading the excerpt from Marketing to the Social Web. In short, the book provides 12 steps to help companies migrate from the "old" marketing to the "new" marketing that's necessary to succeed in the world of Web 2.0.
Weber's steps include references to branding, segmentation, communications and more. He provides a fairly comprehensive list of ways businesspeople need to change their marketing mindsets to succeed going forward. A few of my favorites are:
- Communicate interactively
- Embrace consumer content
- Accept customer reviews
I agree with Larry Weber that there is no room for closed-minded, tunnel vision when it comes to developing marketing strategies in today's social web-focused consumer environment. Just yesterday, I published a post on MarketingBlurb that reiterated the importance of online influencers in consumers' purchase decisions (you can read that post here). The marketing world has changed, and it appears that Larry Weber has done a nice job of breaking down the effects of those changes and the necessary responses to those changes in terms of marketing strategies and tactics. I can't wait to read the book.
Check out the full post on Brandweek here. It includes a lot more detail about each of the 12 steps to surviving the business web.
