Craigslist Murder Brings Negative Publicity to Online Sales Site

Craigslist isn't usually tied to heinous crimes, but last week, the site was the source of a brutal murder when Katherine Ann Olson responded to Craigslist.org ad for a babysitter.  Police believe that when she met the ad's poster, a 19-year old Savage, Minnesota man, he murdered her.  He is in custody as the sole person suspected of the Craigslist murder.Katherine%20Olson%20Craigslist%20Murder.jpg

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has stated that his company is working closely with the police, but he has never heard of Craigslist being linked to such a violent crime.  Now that the worst has happened and a 24-year old woman, Katherine Olson, was murdered as the result of an ad placed on Craigslist, how will the company bounce back?  Is it likely now that copycat criminals will follow suit and use Craigslist as a site to perpetrate crimes?

It looks like Craigslist will need to rethink its security features to regain the confidence of consumers.  I'm assuming that many Craigslist users might think twice before answering ads in the future.  I know I will.  I don't think a publicity campaign will be enough to reassure consumers that Craigslist is safe.  I think changes are in order from Craigslist to help protect users.  Then the appropriate marketing and PR should follow.

What do you think?  Does Craigslist have a responsibility to implement additional protections for consumers?

Its very unfortunate for this young lady, it just speaks
to the criminality that exists today. To use a perfectly
wonderful, community centered internet site to hurt someone is an atrocity. It also makes it hard on us who
wouldn't think to hurt anyone. Craigslist has done everything to speak out and be counted upon to help others. Now we need to scrutinize everything and everyone.

I feel bad for that woman and her family, but to hold Craigslist responsible in any way seems rediculous. The man could have posted an ad in the newspaper and acted the same way. Should we ban newspaper advertisements as well? What exactly would the author of this article have Craigslist do?

Anonymous,

As this is a blog about marketing, I did not suggest that Craiglsist is responsible for the murder, but I do purport that Craigslist has a social and brand responsibility to communicate a brand image and message consistent with the product it offers. Clearly, there are security issues related to Craigslist as there would be with any similar online (or offline) anonymous sales site where people are required to meet face-to-face to complete a transaction.

From a marketing and branding perspective, I would suggest that Craigslist launch a branding push to regenerate peace-of-mind related to the use of their site. If they want to be seen as a channel leader, then I suggest that they raise the bar of awareness by implementing social awareness campaigns to ensure users are well educated and informed about online sales such as those offered on Craigslist. Many parts of this branding campaign would fall within the "good will" category of the balance sheet, so it would not only give the brand a boost but also help the online community.

Those are just a couple ideas off the top of my head that I think would help Craigslist from a marketing perspective. Again, since this is a marketing blog, I invite readers to provide their insight and ideas for other ways Craigslist can maintain or repair their brand after such a horrible incident related to their brand occured.

I do believe Craigslist should be held somewhat accountable for this horrible incident. I have also been subjected to a Craigslist horror story, as someone sent me a fraudulant check, which i deposited and then was held liable for after i sent money western union to someone i trusted on good faith and craigslist popularity. Needless to say, that was an idiot move on my part after the fact, but I feel like Craigslist needs to up their security and interact more with people using this site.

My God, it's true. I read that craigslist flaggers take off reasonable and articulate comments and leave the Jerry Springer, debase mentality (my little deduction) comments on. Cuss and show disrespect, and you can be there for days. Try to be upstanding, & you are gone! Especially in the pet forum. Sadly, the precious innocent had to pay the price to alert us to make them accountable! There are absolutely no warnings of the kind of vile, vicious people who prowl there, until you encounter one. Check it out. It's not even hard to prove. craigslist promotes the debate & fighting that a few tweaks would fix it. Who wants to be part of a "community" like that? Craigslist cannot take credit for the legitimate transactions that do take place between the decent people who innocently wander onto the site.

There is some really creepy people on craigslist. But it's like that with anything on the internet. You never know what is out there.
