Craigslist isn't usually tied to heinous crimes, but last week, the site was the source of a brutal murder when Katherine Ann Olson responded to Craigslist.org ad for a babysitter. Police believe that when she met the ad's poster, a 19-year old Savage, Minnesota man, he murdered her. He is in custody as the sole person suspected of the Craigslist murder.![]()
Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has stated that his company is working closely with the police, but he has never heard of Craigslist being linked to such a violent crime. Now that the worst has happened and a 24-year old woman, Katherine Olson, was murdered as the result of an ad placed on Craigslist, how will the company bounce back? Is it likely now that copycat criminals will follow suit and use Craigslist as a site to perpetrate crimes?
It looks like Craigslist will need to rethink its security features to regain the confidence of consumers. I'm assuming that many Craigslist users might think twice before answering ads in the future. I know I will. I don't think a publicity campaign will be enough to reassure consumers that Craigslist is safe. I think changes are in order from Craigslist to help protect users. Then the appropriate marketing and PR should follow.
What do you think? Does Craigslist have a responsibility to implement additional protections for consumers?

Its very unfortunate for this young lady, it just speaks
to the criminality that exists today. To use a perfectly
wonderful, community centered internet site to hurt someone is an atrocity. It also makes it hard on us who
wouldn't think to hurt anyone. Craigslist has done everything to speak out and be counted upon to help others. Now we need to scrutinize everything and everyone.
