Fortune released their annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business. It's a diverse list of companies and industries, so it's great to see women making strides and obtaining powerful roles in a variety of businesses.![]()
I was surprised however by the salaries of these women. Don't get me wrong, they make a lot of money, but not in comparison to the most powerful men in business. Looking at the total compensation in 2006 for each of these women, the leader of the pack, Zoe Cruz of Morgan Stanley, made $30 million. In the number two position is Susan L. Decker who made $25 million from Yahoo. The salaries begin to drop significantly from there with only twelve women on Fortune's list earning over $10 million in total compensation in 2006.
Of course, this list is not supposed to be of the highest paid women in business, but it still strikes me as surprising that these women are in such powerful positions and obviously make less than their male counterparts. We've come a long way from where women stood in the business world back in 1943 when Transportation Magazine published what can now be considered a laughable article called 11 Tips on How to Handle Women Employees.
