
On October 1st, I wrote about Radioheads' In Rainbows New Marketing Strategy. Today, that strategy was put to the test as Radiohead's first album in four years, In Rainbows, was released without a record label.![]()
So far, reactions from fans have been extremely positive to Radiohead's strategy for selling In Rainbows through a "you pick the price" download with thousands of downloads pre-selling and most fans paying about $10.00 for their download. An $82 deluxe box set is also said to be selling well.
Other well-known artists without record labels such as Oasis and Jamioiquai are reportedly considering selling future albums using a strategy similar to Radiohead's, and Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails left its label this week with thoughts of bypassing a record label for future album releases.
Should record labels be concerned? Is the future of the music business changing? Radiohead seems to be making a strong case for a major trend shift.
