A new report by the USC Annenberg School's Center for the Digital Future states that in 2006, Internet users spent at least one full workday each week online. That's a 70% increase from just five years prior to the 2006 study. In fact, the average amount of time spent online at work is 7.8 hours which equates to 31 hours per month. Imagine the opportunities available to online marketers during those hours.![]()
Perhaps the most interesting part of the study by the USC Annenberg School's Center for Digital Future is the increase in the time spent online by people while they are at work in just one year from 2005 to 2006. In 2005, internet users spent 5.6 hours per week online while at work. In 2006, that number had increased to 7.8. That's a 39% increase in just one year.

I'll admit this is definitely a negative finding for human resources and managers who want to think their employees are productive each and every day, but for marketers, these results mean one thing - opportunity. In fact, the results should act as a reminder of the importance not only of online advertising but also of social media marketing and viral marketing.
The number of people with internet access at work is constantly growing and that means more people online for businesses to reach with their marketing messages. That's time when traditional advertising on television or radio may not be able to reach these consumers, but the internet can. Therefore, it's important to keep this trend in mind when you're creating your marketing plan. The importance of online marketing keeps growing. Don't miss out on the opportunities the internet presents.
