Top 50 U.S. Web Rankings for December 2007: An Interesting Look at Who's Who of the Internet

ComScore Media Metrix released their list of the Top 50 U.S. Web Rankings for December 2007 yesterday, and the results are a mixed bag of what you'd expect with a few surprises (or at least interesting rankings) mixed in.

Not surprising is the growth in traffic to retail sites in December 2007 over November 2007.  Shipping sites and weather sites also saw traffic gains in December over November.  However, a ranking that might surprise you is OfficeMax (NYSE: OMX) as experiencing the biggest single site traffic gain from November to December.  What put OfficeMax at the top of the charts with a 170% increase in traffic from November to December?  The answer (and a couple of interesting charts) is after the jump (you don't think I'd give it away that easy did you?).

OfficeMax can attribute the vast majority of that 170% traffic increase to its very popular (and very viral) ElfYourself.com site.  Come on, admit it, did you elf yourself this year?  With 15.3 million visitors to OfficeMax sites in December, it looks like a lot of people did.

Following is a chart of the top 50 properties online in December 2007 from comScore.  This gives a good perspective of who the big players are during the holidays (and probably most of the year).  I think it's interesting that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) seems to be the behomoth of the online world, yet Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) is still number one in terms of traffic to its various sites.  Do any of the companies on this list surprise you?

Following is another interesting chart from comScore that shows the top 50 ad networks and sites accepting advertising:

Reach % denotes the percentage of the total Internet population that viewed a particular entity at least once in December.  For instance, Yahoo! was seen by 73 percent of the more than 183 million Internet users in December.

* Entity has assigned some portion of traffic to other syndicated entities.

** Denotes an advertising network.

According to comScore, Advertising.com has been the leader of this pack for awhile, but this chart gives a really good look at the dominant advertising online.  Again, what do you think?  Any surprises?
