It's called ad creep, and it's made its way onto school buses. First, McDonald's placed ads on report cards (which has since stopped), and now, SAC, Inc. (an advertising company) has secured an 11" strip of advertising space above the windows inside South Carolina school buses. ![]()
SAC won the contract from the South Carolina Department of Education to sell the advertising space on participating school buses. 80% of the revenue generated will go back to the South Carolina Department of Education for school district funding.
Here is a quote from SAC's special website, schoolbusadvertising.com:
"We at SAC, Inc. are excited about the doors of opportunity this project can open for the children of our state. The goal of SAC, Inc is to provide this additional revenue while also displaying supportive and uplifting messages to our children. The ads will be age appropriate , promote a healthy and productive life, and are directly approved at the district level by district appointed personnel."
I can certainly see both sides to the debate regarding whether or not schools should put ads inside school buses. On one hand, kids are already exposed to so much advertising, it seems wrong to put ads in school buses. On the other hand, it seems like a fairly harmless way to generate money for schools who so desperately need it.
What do you think about ads inside school buses? Good or bad? It's important to note that most of the ads that have been sold so far are from local businesses.
