Super Bowl Commercials: Audi Rules

There were a lot of entertaining commercials during the Super Bowl last night.  With each 30-second spot costing $2.7 million, I think several of the Super Bowl commercials really hit the mark.  I thought the Pepsi commercial featuring Justin Timberlake was well done and attention-getting.

In terms of grabbing the attention of a busy television viewers and an ad that is more evergreen, I like the Audi ad that recreated a scene from The Godfather substituting motor oil for blood.  Even if viewers have never seen The Godfather, I think the music in this ad would stop a person who doesn't usually pay attention to ads and get them to take a look at what's going on.Super%20Bowl%20commercials%20Audi.jpg

What did you think of the Super Bowl ads?  Which was your favorite?  Which do you think is the most effective?  Which do you think were the most evergreen and will survive longer than the four-plus hours of the Super Bowl?

I didn't like the Audi ad - too violent and creepy. And if you don't know the movie it really didn't make sense.

My favorites: 1) Careerbuilder.com "Follow your heart" - unusual image that definitely got the message across. Had the "ick factor" followed by humor and meaning. 2) Planters "Unibrow" - very funny and works well off the "Ugly Betty" craze. 3) Coca-Cola "Carville/Frist" - It's about time they jumped on the "jinx/buy me a coke." The images of them together made me laugh out loud AND want a Coke. I also liked the Zantac ad - I like the new concept of how having heartburn changes your life and the suggestion of how much better your life will be without it. If taking Zantac will get me a guy that cute, you bet I will!

Both Budweiser and Bud Light did a good job of continuing with themes that have been effective for them. The etrade baby ones were funny and certainly aimed at a specific demographic. I thought the godaddy.com ad was a clever (yet cheap) way to drive traffic to their site and it was interesting how they used both men AND women. I didn't like the cars.com ads, and I despised the salesgenie.com ads.

By far the funniest ads were Shaq as a jockey and T-mobile with Charles Barkeley. And being a dog person, I liked the gatorade ad with the chocolate Lab, although I seriously doubt it will help their sales at all.
