It seems like there is no better time for companies to tie-in free gas to their promotions. More and more tie-ins are popping up everyday. I'm waiting to see how bizarre they get - "Buy Preparation H and get $5 in free gas!" Despite the fact that everyone and anyone is jumping on the gas discount promotion bandwagon, there are some tie-ins that make sense. In fact, affiliate branded credit cards that include gas rewards are getting a lot of buzz with the recent emergence of $4+ gasoline.![]()
Affiliate credit cards are not a new marketing strategy. In short, the company sponsoring the card takes a bite out of up-front profits in the hopes that the customer will end up charging more on the branded credit card then just gas (or whatever company has branded the card). Adding credit card rewards is a great trick to add to the perceived value of the card. Let's face it - credit card rewards usually amount to very little, but if customers don't overuse the card, then the rewards might actually amount to a bit more than pocket change. Every little bit helps.
It's likely we'll see a big push for affiliate credit cards and even credit cards from non-gas companies with free gas reward tie-ins attached to them. Let's see who does it best.
Do you have an affiliate credit card or a card that offers rewards for gas purchases or discounted gas?
