If you upload your photos to Flickr, you just might get contacted by Getty with an offer to purchase your photo to add to the Getty library. Yahoo! (who owns Flickr) and Getty signed a deal yesterday that allows Getty editors to hand-pick images from the Flickr collection to add to the Getty library of over two billion photos.![]()
If a Getty editor picks your photo on Flickr, you'll receive an email asking you to join a special Flickr-branded photo group on the Getty website and you'll be paid a contributor fee if your photo is actually added to the Getty library. No word on what the exact fee is, but according to The Register, it will be equal to the amount that existing Getty photographers are paid per photo.
Sounds like a good deal for both Getty and Flickr users whose photos are selected, but it's probably not a great deal for consumers who will have to pay the hefty pricetags Getty charges to access photos that may have been available for free via creative commons licenses before Getty got involved. What do you think?
